Welcome to E. Gordon West Fine Art
I am a 90-year old red-green color blind artist. I cannot tell the difference when they are of the same value. Yet art (in watercolor) has
been my life-long endeavor. I must have gained my interest in art when I sat on my dad’s lap and watched draw mechanical renderings as an engineer. It was greatly enhanced by my high school art teacher and was able to get an art scholarship at the University of Louisville. I spent over 30 years working for the Army and Air Force as a civilian, retired and then started painting full time.
I paint almost daily. Painting has always been a challenge to me especially using the media of watercolor. Even today, after years and years of painting, I do not have complete control of the water-based medium…accidents always happen in watercolor, they may be minute but they are there. It is the creative part as to what to do with them, fix them or use them. Then there is the consideration of values and colors on how they interact. Then there is the other challenge of being red/green color blind. A final challenge is subject matter. Why the painting ? Is there a message? A documentation? A statement? A pure visual expression?
I am blessed that I have relatively sufficient skills that I have received professional recognition through art competitions and art organization membership such as the American Watercolor Society and the National Watercolor Society. But perhaps the best blessing is that a person may want to own an E. Gordon West.
